Conductor and Music Director
Nancy Torrente holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Cello Performance from Philadelphia College of the Performing Arts and a Master of Music Degree in Cello Performance from Queens College. She has served as a guest conductor in numerous regional orchestra competitions and festivals and has performed professionally in multiple orchestras and ensembles, often as the principal cellist.
She was Orchestra Director and Conductor at the middle and high schools in the Yorktown, NY, Central School system for 22 years. During this time she held several administrative positions in addition to her conducting and teaching, and worked as Coordinator of the entire district music faculty, overseeing all curriculum, concerts, and performances, as well as managing the district music budget.
Nancy is both Conductor and Music Director for the orchestra, and her work will include planning programs, selecting repertoire, conducting performances, developing relationships with the community, and furthering the orchestra’s goal of providing accessible classical music to our local residents.
The Cape Community Orchestra, formerly known as the First Congregational Church of Harwich Orchestra, was formed in 1990 to maintain an orchestra on Cape Cod for musician of all ages who have the ability to read and perform music on the instrument of their choice. The group performs orchestral programs consisting of classical, popular, show, operatic, march, and ballet music. Our members come from the entire Cape Cod area and include public school musicians.
Although the orchestra is well staffed with over forty five members, we always welcome string players, particularly violists, and occasionally have openings in other sections. Please see postings in Orchestra News or inquire at our email address.
Cape Community Orchestra is supported by grants, including from the Cape Cod Melody Tend, annual supporter donations, and free will donations received at our fall and spring concerts.
Conductor from 2002 to 2020
John P. Hagon, former Chair of the Music Education Department at Berklee College of Music in Boston, has served as music director and conductor of community bands for over thirty years. His long association with the Barnstable Town Band, the Harwich Town Band, Cape Cod Concert Band, and the Cape Community Orchestra, is well known on Cape Cod. Hagon completed a military music career of 21 years in 1997, which saw 18 years as musician and conductor of the 215th Army Band of the Massachusetts National Guard, touring abroad in Jamaica, Greece, and the Netherlands. John had a special interest in the music of John Philip Sousa and often recreated the programs of many of Sousa’s famous concerts with local town bands.
